
The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Basrah - College of Medicine held a scientific symposium for Basrah doctors and postgraduate students on recommendations for fasting during Ramadan month, in the presence of the Dean of the College of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Nawfal Ali Al-Mubarak
The symposium was presented by Members of Internal Medicine Department and focused on discussion of fasting, heart disease, Renal failure, whom is allowed to fast during this month, and changing the insulin dose during fasting. The symposium recommended the necessity of checking the blood glucose level for diabetic patients at home from one to seven times per day during this month. When blood glucose reaches 70 mg or 300 mg, he must breakfast immediately. Diabetics must also consult a doctor 1-3 months before Ramadan for discussion of Fasting. Diabetics who fasted during Ramadan must be urged to consult a doctor after Ramadan to determine the extent of the effect of fasting on them. Doctors have stressed the need to avoid fasting for people with the following conditions:
Type 1 diabetes ,asymptomatic hypoglycemia, Repeated attacks of severe hypoglycemia during the last three months before Ramadan, Repeated attacks of high blood glucose level (> 300 mg) in the last three months before Ramadan ,Uncontrolled pregnancy, Renal failure, Heart failure and severe arterial diseases.
