Master's thesis in the College of Medicine discusses the Periostin in type 2 diabetes mellitus

The Faculty of Medicine, University of Basrah, discussed a master's thesis for estimating periostin  levels in type 2 diabetics. The research presented by the student Nasser Ali Nasser aims to compare serum periostin levels between people with type 2 diabetes and the control group, as well as to study the association between periostin levels with lipd profiles . In addition to assessing the effect of controlling diabetes, age, body mass index, and BMI and Waist  circumference and type of diabetes treatment at periostin  levels. The research concluded that the arithmetic rate of the average concentration of periostin in the blood serum was significantly higher in diabetics compared to the control group. And there is a positive and statistically significant association between levels of periostin and fasting sugar, as well as with HbA1c . In addition, there was a negative association between periostin levels with age for diabetics . High levels of periostin in patients with prolonged diabetes compared to those newly diagnosed can be an indication of metabolic disorder as the disease progresses. Research also showed that the level of periostin is higher in people who have obesity and weight gain. This may indicate that obesity can be one of the causes of the high level of periostin .
