A Master's thesis at the University of Basrah - College of Medicine discussed the assessment of iron status in psoriasis patients
The thesis presented by the student, Rabab Rayhan Naif, aims to study the iron status in psoriasis patients compared to normal people by measuring both standard and new biomarkers. These include serum concentrations of hepcidin, ferritin, iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), transferrin saturation (TSAT), unsaturated iron binding capacity (UIBC), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). In addition, the study aimed to evaluate hematological parameters such as hemoglobin level, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH). Furthermore, the research sought to examine the relationships between these parameters and factors such as psoriasis severity, duration, type, and family history, as well as to study the association of these parameters with each other.
The study concluded that serum hepcidin, iron, TSAT, TIBC, UIBC, MCV, MCH, and hs-CRP played a vital role in psoriasis patients. They provide valuable insights for the type, severity, duration, family history, age and gender differences between the patient and control group
