Under the support of the President of Basrah University; Prof. Dr. Saad Shaheen Hammadi, and the supervision of the Dean of the College of Medicine; Prof. Dr. Khalil Ismail Al-Hamdi.The Department of Microbiology / College of Medicine / University of Basrah held a workshop entitled (DNA sequencing and bioinformatics)..The aim of the workshop was to give a brief idea of the principles and basics of DNA sequencing, and to learn the ideal methods for preparing a DNA sample in the laboratory before sending it to the relevant companies for identification the sequence of nitrogenous bases. In addition, learn how to analyze DNA sequencing results using specialized software, identifying similarities and differences between laboratory’s prepared samples and existing samples in GenBank. The workshop included theoretical and electronic application lectures on the computer presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Firas Taha Mansour. The first day included two theoretical lectures. The first lecture entitled: Ideal methods for preparing a DNA sample in the laboratory, and the second lecture entitled: Sending the DNA samples for sequencing and receiving the results electronically. The second day included practical part (application on the computer) that focused on analysing the results of DNA sequencing by Geneious software. The workshop recommended the application of the methods that were reviewed in DNA analysis in order obtain the best results and to reduce the problems that may accompany the analysis process
