In the Basrah University - College of Medicine, a Board thesis discussed the study of perioperative risk factors & outcome after Pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure). The thesis that presented by the student Mustafa Mohammed Fakher, aims to identify the risk factors associated with the post-operative complications. The thesis concluded that the increased age and the presence of preoperative co-morbidities are independent predictors of developing postoperative morbidity and mortality. The most common postoperative complications leading to mortality are pulmonary embolism and pancreatic leak. The thesis concluded that the control of co-morbidities and improvement of perioperative care are essential in decreasing postoperative morbidity and mortality.
